Well back in the mid 80s, the Salem Kaiser School District at that time decided the building was not suitable for classroom use.\r\nIt would take a lot of money, a lot of work to bring it up to their standards. So at that time, uh, they decided to sell the property. I mentioned before Galen Springer was the developer. He was going to put in the Schoolhouse Square Shopping Center. And I wasn't involved at that time, but the Board of Kaiser Heritage at that time, or it was called the Save Our School Committee before it became a, a foundation.\r\nUh, the Save Our School Committee approached Galen Springer to see if he would donate. the original part of the","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://keizerheritagemuseum.aviaryplatform.com/collections/3160/collection_resources/140740/file/260123#t=0.0,60.0"},{"id":"https://keizerheritagemuseum.aviaryplatform.com/collections/3160/collection_resources/140740/file/260123/transcript/74240/annotation/2","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"school, because they'd added on to it in 1930s and 1940s to take up the space, the whole block space that it did. And he ended up agreeing to, to do that, to donate it. And they asked him to, he had to move it, you know, right away because he's trying to do the shopping centers costing him money.\r\nSo the city had a park right behind the shopping center called Fernwood Park. And so the city agreed that the school, could be moved over to that location until they figured out what to, what to do with it on a permanent basis. So it got moved over there. Um, that was, I want to say within the 1992 time frame, maybe even earlier than that.\r\nBut they, uh, the one bad thing about it being there, it was out of sight, out of mind. So not only, I mean, the Save Our School Committee did form the Kaiser Heritage Foundation and go forward trying to raise money. But doing it with","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://keizerheritagemuseum.aviaryplatform.com/collections/3160/collection_resources/140740/file/260123#t=60.0,120.0"},{"id":"https://keizerheritagemuseum.aviaryplatform.com/collections/3160/collection_resources/140740/file/260123/transcript/74240/annotation/3","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"different small fundraisers was not getting enough money. And that's what led to the 1998 decisions.\r\nBut in the meantime, the school, um, shouldn't save McNary High School kids, but kids in general are mischief makers, and they would break into the school and have their parties and have fun. So that helped put the school into further disrepair. And, uh, The neighbors didn't like it for that reason, too, in that area.\r\nSo anyway, so that's why eventually the school did get moved then in 1996 down the street to the City Hall property where it's located now. And then it sat there for a couple years until the 1998 process started. That kind of brings you a little more of the history and back to where we are currently.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://keizerheritagemuseum.aviaryplatform.com/collections/3160/collection_resources/140740/file/260123#t=120.0,170.4703"}]}]}]}
